Top 25 sees little movement in Division I’s second full week of competition
Manheim, Pennsylvania – There was minimal movement inside the Top 25 as the NWCA released its latest Division I Coaches Poll on Tuesday.
Arizona State (1-0) returned to the top five, while Oklahoma State (2-0) made a move into the No. 10 spot after a pair of weekend wins in the Keystone State.
Top-ranked Penn State opened its season with a 44-3 win over Lock Haven, while second-ranked Iowa welcomed Division I’s newest member, California Baptist, to Carver-Hawkeye with a 42-3 win.
Fourth-ranked Ohio State (1-0) opened dual action with an 18-13 win over then-No. 10 Virginia Tech at the Covelli Center in Columbus. Arizona State (1-0) traveled to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and opened with a 25-16 win over No. 21 Rutgers at WrangleMania. Michigan made a trip to the Carolinas for two unique events and came away with a pair of wins. Participating in the Battle at Bragg, a dual event at the U.S. Army’s Fort Bragg, Michigan topped Campbell 26-6 before heading up to Chapel Hill and topping No. 16 North Carolina 23-12 on the Tar Heels’ baseball field in what was dubbed, Doubles on the Diamond.
Iowa State improved to 4-0 after beating California Baptist 39-9 in Ames. Despite winning two duals over Lock Haven and then-No. 18 Nebraska, NC State (3-0) slid one spot to No. 9 this week.
This Week: Ranked action kicks off on Thursday as second-ranked Iowa heads to Army West Point, while a top-five battle will hit the desert as No. 5 Arizona State will host No. 3 Missouri.
On Friday, another Journeymen event, Armbar at the Armory will feature No. 2 Iowa, No. 9 NC State, Illinois, Central Michigan, Sacred Heart and Buffalo along with Division III TCNJ and Castleton. Other ranked teams in action include Ohio State hosting Columbia, Maryland heading to Pittsburgh, Binghamton facing off in Fargo against North Dakota State and Wyoming battling in Stillwater against Oklahoma State.
Two ranked duals highlight Saturday’s light schedule as No. 14 Wisconsin travels to No. 7 Cornell and No. 13 Lehigh will travel to No. 17 Pittsburgh.
Sunday’s ranked docket includes Ohio State at North Carolina, Columbia at Michigan, Binghamton at Minnesota, Iowa State vs. NAIA champion Grand View in Humboldt, Iowa, and Northwestern in scheduled to head to the University of Virginia.
Methodology: The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote and so on through to one point for a 25th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results.
