The NWCA Releases Preseason NCAA Women’s Coaches Poll

MANHEIM, Pa. – With the start of 2022-23 women’s wrestling season nearing, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released their NCAA Women’s Wrestling Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

For the first time in the four-year program history, North Central College is ranked atop the poll with 95 points. The Cardinals finished fourth at the 2022 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) National Championships. They are followed by 2022 runner-up and NWCA National Duals champion King University who has 88 points. These two programs are the only two that have at least 10 individuals ranked with North Central having 13 individuals ranked and King having 11.

Colorado Mesa University comes in third with 73 points and eight individuals ranked while defending national champion McKendree University is fourth with 57 points and seven individuals ranked.

Simon Fraser University checks in at sixth with 32 points while Tiffin University is ranked seventh with 28 points. Presbyterian College comes in eight with 21 points before a pair of top-10 newcomers. Lindenwood University is ranked ninth with 19 points while New Jersey City College is 10th with 17 points.

INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS

Four individuals return after winning national titles a season ago, led by seniors Ashlynn Ortega of King and North Central’s Yelena Makoyed. Ortega is ranked No. 1 at 143 pounds while Makoyed is atop the 170-pound rankings. Junior Cameron Guerin is ranked atop the 130-pound ranking following a national title. At 101 pounds, Tiffin’s Olivia Shore is ranked first following a national title during her freshman season.

Back again this year, will be the NWCA wrestlers of the month, both regional and national. The regional wrestlers of the month will be released during the first week of each month with the national winner to be selected from those five.
