NWCA Announces the NCAA Division II Men’s Rookie Wrestler of the Year

Manheim, PA – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced the NCAA Division II Rookie of the Year finalists following the 2022-23 season.

The six finalists represent each of the NCAA Division II Super Regionals. The coaches of NCAA Division II will now vote on the National Rookie of the Year from these six regional honorees. 
 
From Super Region 1, true freshman Jake Neffenegger of Mercyhurst finished seventh at 141 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. He was also the 141 Super Region 1 Champion and finished the season with a record of 25-9.  
 
The finalist from Super Region 2 is another true freshman in David Hunsberger of Lander. The Bearcat 165 finished fourth at the NCAA Division II National Championships with a record of 29-5, and was also a Super Region 2 Champion and the SACC Freshman of the Year. 
 
Super Region 3’s finalist is Nate Barrett of Ashland. The Eagle 174 was the eighth-place finisher at the NCAA Division II National Championships this season, and was the Super Region 3 Champion. He finished his redshirt freshman season with a record of 18-8. 
 
John Gholson of William Jewell is Super Region 4’s finalist. The true freshman finished fourth at 184 in Super Region 4 and was the 2023 Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.  
 
In Super Region 5, UW-Parkside’s Shane Corrigan is the finalist. The true freshman was the seventh-place finisher at 125 pounds at the NCAA Division II National Championships and was Champion at 125 in Super Region 5. He finished his season with a record of 33-8. 
 
The Super Region 6 finalist is Keegan Gehlhausen of Chadron State. A redshirt freshman, Gehlhausen was an NCAA National Qualifier at 184 pounds after finishing as runner-up in Super Region 6. He was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year as well, finishing the year 16-12.

The National Rookie of the Year will be announced by the NWCA in the coming weeks.
