TERREL WILBOURN NAMED CMU’S FIRST MEN’S WRESTLING COACH

FAYETTE, Mo. – Central Methodist University has announced the hiring of Terrel Wilbourn as the program’s first men’s wrestling coach. The announcement of Wilbourn as head coach was made Friday by Dr. Joe Parisi, Vice President for enrollment management at CMU. Parisi himself is a decorated former wrestling coach, with five NAIA national championships to his credit.
Wilbourn, a Lindenwood University alum, is one of the most decorated wrestlers at the institution. He was a four-time All-American, three-time national finalist, and an NCAA national champion in a Lions singlet. Wilbourn was the first national champion in Lindenwood history with an undefeated 25-0 record to close his senior campaign in 2015-16.
“We are extremely excited to announce Terrel as head coach of the Central Methodist University Eagles,” said Parisi. “Terrel has all the ingredients of a successful head coach: intelligence, innovation, character, organizational and leadership skills, and a commanding presence. He also has a stellar reputation, and is one of the most decorated high school and college wrestlers the state of Missouri has seen. I feel extremely fortunate and could not be more excited for Eagle Nation and the future of our program. I truly believe that we have hired the premier young coach in the country and that exciting times lie ahead.”
The Francis Howell Central graduate was also a three-time state champion, NHSCA national champion, cadet freestyle national champion, and junior freestyle national runner-up. He also claimed the NJCAA National Champion title in the 141-pound weight class as a freshman at Iowa Central Community College.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity,” stated Wilbourn. “Now it’s time to get to work!”
Wilbourn will come to Central Methodist after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Lindenwood, coaching three All-Americans and the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Champion at 125 pounds.
Prior to his stint with the Lions, Wilbourn worked at the Maritime Wrestling Academy in Paducah, Kentucky. He worked with the middle school wrestling team and was named the 2018 Kentucky Middle School Coach of the Year.
Campus officials made the announcement to add the program in February, committing to start both men’s wrestling and women’s wrestling in the fall of 2019. In addition, they announced a fundraising campaign to renovate one of CMU’s oldest and greatest buildings, Clingenpeel Hall, for one of the oldest and greatest sports.
