GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport University’s Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Paul Lowden announced that the university has decided to hire Scott Lucas as the new head coach for the men’s and women’s wrestling programs.

“After conducting a national search, we are excited to welcome Scott Lucas as our new head men’s and women’s wrestling coach,” said Lowden. “Lucas’ valuable life experience and vast array of involvement in the sport of wrestling will bring immediate value, leadership and discipline to our programs. It was evident in the hiring process that he was not only passionate about the sport, but most importantly passionate about developing young men and women.”

Lucas, who has coached for over two decades, has recent experience as the head coach at Cleary University in Howell, Michigan from 2016-18. He started the program as they were heading towards their inaugural season as a member of the NAIA. He has also served as head coach at Washtenaw Community College and had a seven-year stint as an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan University.

Aside from his stint at EMU, Lucas, who has coached at all levels from youth to college, was the youth wrestling coach at Webberville Community Schools in 2018. He also has worked with youth programs in Bangor (Maine), Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Farmington and Westland John Glenn.

Lucas wrestled himself at Michigan State University from 1985-87 and while a member of the City of Westland Fire Department, he competed in the National Police and Fire Sports Festival Championships winning a gold medal in 1996. He also won seven medals in eight World Police and Fire Games in freestyle wrestling over the years. A retired professional fire chief, he now is the managing director of Firefighter Strong, LLC based out of Williamston.

“I would like to thank President Pappas, Paul Lowden and Ronda Varnesdeel for the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing athletic department and university,” said Lucas. “I look forward to building on the foundation set by the previous wrestling coaches and providing the best possible experience for our student-athletes.”

Lucas earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Leadership from Concordia University (Mich.) in 2008 and received his graduate certificate from the Center for Regional and National Security in the School of Fire Staff and Command from Eastern Michigan University in 2009.
