NWCA Announces Mercyhurst University’s Mike Wehler as the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award Winner for Division II

By Dan Weaver

The NWCA is proud to announce the winner of the Division II Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award to Mercyhurst University head coach, Mike Wehler.

The Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence award is presented annually to one coach across each division of collegiate wrestling and is intended for an outstanding coach who epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.

Congratulations to all of the finalists, Doug Moses, New Mexico Highlands, Steve Costanzo, St. Cloud State, and Mike Wehler, Mercyhurst University.

Mike Wehler was named the second wrestling coach in Mercyhurst University history on August 1, 2007. To say he’s done a terrific job would be a gross understatement.

Coach Wehler entered his 12th season as The Lakers head coach. The Lakers ended this dual meet season with an 11-2 record going on an 11-straight win run before losing their first match of the season. They finished second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with a 5-2 conference record.

Last season, Mercyhurst finished tenth in the nation during the 2016-17 season with a 10-5 dual meet season record while going 5-2 PSAC record. Throughout the post season Wehler had five competitors punch their tickets to the national tournament, in which two earned All-American status. Willie Bohince became the first four time All-American in Mercyhurst wrestling program history with his second finals appearance in two years, while Francis Mizia became a three time All-American with a third-place finish. Wehler’s grapplers secured the seventh highest GPA in DII with a 3.360.

NWCA Executive Director, Mike Moyer, has this to say about Coach Mike Wehler, “Coach Wehler continues to set the bar high in the coaching profession. He is a consummate servant leader who is always giving back to the sport.”
