NWCA Announces February Winners of the NCAA Women’s Region Wrestler of the Month Awards

MANHEIM, Pa. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced their NCAA Women’s Wrestling Region Wrestlers of the Month. Mia Macaluso of East Stroudsburg University, Yelena Makoyed of North Central University, Ashlynn Ortega of King University, and Marissa Gallegos of Colorado Mesa University were honored for their performances in February.

NORTHEAST REGION

Macaluso has gone undefeated (6-0) since joining the Warrior lineup in late December after battling back from an injury at the Junior World Championships. In her first two collegiate matches, Macaluso downed nationally ranked competition, ninth-ranked Anya Kannpenberger of Gannon University, 14-12, and fifth-ranked Naomi Henry of New Jersey City University 11-4. She completed her first collegiate regular season with a 6-0 record, earning three points, a tech fall, and two decision victories. After just one collegiate match, she earned her first national ranking, coming at 130 pounds.

NORTHWEST REGION

Makoyed wins her second regional wrestler of the month honor as she was also recognized in November. During February, Makoyed again went undefeated, posting five wins, including four pins. At the Grand View Open, Makoyed finished first at 170 pounds, winning all five matches. She earned a 10-0 technical fall over Gannon’s Annabelle Helm before pinning fifth-ranked Jade Herzer of UW-Stevens Point in 1:30 in the championship bout. Makoyed is currently 20-1 going into this weekend’s regional championships.

SOUTHEAST REGION

Ortega took all four wins in the month via 10-0 technical fall at either 155 or 143 pounds. In a dual against No. 14 Limestone, she defeated Caitlyn Gilmore at 155 pounds before topping Shelsy Rneous in an extra match. She followed that by winning a pair of matches at the Limestone Open, defeating Mika Walters of Limestone and Maya Letona of Bridge the D1vide.

SOUTHWEST REGION

Gallegos won the 123-pound title at the Grand View Open by going 6-0. She defeated Alisha Howk 6-2 in the championship bout and No. 6 Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central 10-0 in the semifinals. Gallegos is 17-1 this season and 58-7 in her collegiate career.
