NWCA Announces December Winners of the NCAA Women’s Region Wrestler of the Month Awards

MANHEIM, PA – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced their second women’s wrestling Region Wrestlers of the Month awards today. Following a great December, Lana Perez of Gannon University, Sage Mortimer of King University, Jenavi Alejandro of Tiffin University, Alexis Janiak of Aurora University and Hailey Chapman of Colorado Mesa University were all selected Region Wrestlers of the Month.

Region 1
Perez wrestled at 136 pounds at the Northeast Duals where she picked up two pins in her first two matches. The next two matches she wrestled 143 pounds, pinning eighth-ranked Zoe Gress of East Stroudsburg University before earning a technical fall victory over returning All-American, Temitayo Sanusi of Sacred Heart University. Perez went 4-0 with three pins to earn her first career NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month honor for Perez.

Region 2
Mortimer won two tournaments wrestling at 109 pounds in December, the North Central Open where she defeated a pair of ranked foes as well as the Wasps Open. At the North Central Open she topped fifth-ranked Kendra Ryan of North Central on a 14-4 technical fall in a semifinal before defeating top-ranked Sydney Petzinger of North Central 8-2 in the final. She won all five of her matches at the Wasps Open, including a pin of teammate and third-ranked Dianna Holmes. In the month, Mortimer went 9-0, winning all three of her matches against ranked foes while taking six wins by technical fall and two via pin. This marks the second NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month honor for Mortimer as she earned her first last season.

Region 3
Alejandro wrestled at 109 pounds and posted a record of 12-1 in December with three wins via pin and five by technical fall. She won the Soldier Salute with four wins, including three by technical fall. At the Soldier Salute she topped two-time NAIA All-American Tehani Soares of Indiana Tech. This marks the first time Alejandro has been selected NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month.

 Defeated: B. Gonzalez (MoVal Runner up) Iowa via tech, Defeated A. Bayless Iowa, Defeated T. Soares Indiana Tech (NAIA AA 2x) via tech, and won the Soldier Salute Open at 109lbs.

Region 4
Alexis Janiak becomes the first wrestler from Aurora to be selected NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month. Wrestling at 130 pounds, Janiak won the North Central Open and finished runner-up at the Midland’s Women’s Championship. In the month she went 7-1 with six wins by technical fall and one via pin. Janiak took an 11-1 technical fall win over top-ranked Cameron Guerin of McKendree University at the North Central open, a match after defeating Amor Tuttle, who was ranked seventh at 143 pounds, with a 10-0 technical fall.

Region 5
Chapman earns her first NWCA Regional Wrestler of the Month honor after going 5-0 during the month. She helped lead Colorado Mesa to a streak of 18 straight duals wins, wrestling at 130 pounds. After falling to Simon Fraser University’s four-ranked Marquesis Haintz at the Missouri Valley Open by a 10-0 technical fall, she was able to pin her in just 54 seconds at the Las Vegas Desert Duals. For the season, she is 14-2 with six wins by fall. In the month she posted two pins and one win by technical fall.

All five region winners are now eligible for NWCA National Wrestler of the Month which is scheduled to be released on Monday.
