NWCA ANNOUNCES 2022 DIVISION II SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA AWARDS

MANHEIM, Pa.– For the first time in program history, Drury University is atop the NWCA Division II Scholar All-America team ranking. The Panthers posted a GPA of 3.542, good for fourth-best in the history of the Scholar All-America program. Seton Hill (3.505) came in second, while the top team from the last four years, Maryville, came in at #3 with a GPA of 3.468. In addition to the team rankings, 314 student-athletes were honored as Scholar All-American for the 2021-22 season.

Drury’s 3.542 is the fourth-best since the beginning of the Scholar All-America program in 1993-94, with the Panthers posting the seventh GPA of above 3.5 ever.

Both Maryville and Indianapolis led the way with 13 wrestlers named Scholar All-American.Eight of the wrestlers honored had the unique distinction of being named Scholar All-American for a fifth time, due to the extra year awarded by the COVID-19 pandemic.Austin Hertel (Gannon), Taylor Jokerst (Maryville), Jacob Robb (Mercyhurst), Garrett Vos (St. Cloud State), Bryan LaVearn (Tiffin), Jonathan Killingsworth (Nebraska-Kearney), Matt Malcom (Nebraska-Kearney), and Nick Daggett (UNC-Pembroke) all earned Scholar All-American honors for the fifth time in their careers.

INDIVIDUAL ALL-AMERICANS

Of the 314 honorees, 95 wrestled at the 2022 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. Of those 95, 71 were 2022 All-Americans. Seven of this year’s National Champions were also named Scholar All-American: Cole Laya (125), Zeth Brower (141), Noah Hermosillo (149), Josiah Rider (157), Matt Malcom (165) Trevor Turriff (174), Dalton Abney (197). In addition to the seven champions, nine of the 10 runners-up were also Scholar All-American selections. Laya and Malcom also are among 26 Scholar All-American selections that posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, Laya as an Exercise Physiology major and Malcom as a Physical Education major.

Wrestlers from 57 of NCAA Division II’s 65 institutions were honored as Scholar All-American. Super Region 5 led with 68 student-athletes honored, with Super Region 4 in a close second with 63 wrestlers honored.

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II Scholar All-American Team, he must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with that benchmark at 3.25 for those who qualified for the 2022 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships and 3.0 for those who earned NCAA DII All-American status for the 2022 season. The athlete must also have competed in a minimum of four dates of competition.
