UTICA, NY – Utica University Athletic Director Dave Fontaine recently announced the hiring of Connor Lapresi as the first-ever head coach of the Utica University women’s wrestling program. Lapresi will oversee all facets of the program including scouting, recruiting, meets and practice preparation, as well as day-to-day operations.

“We are happy to welcome Connor to our Utica University coaching staff and we look forward to working with him as he builds our inaugural women’s wrestling program,” Fontaine said. “Connor’s coaching experience, knowledge of women’s wrestling along with his personal student-athlete experience wrestling at Cornell University should serve our new program well.”

Lapresi returns to Upstate New York after spending this season as the head women’s wrestling coach at Ferrum College in Ferrum, VA, where he had one wrestler ranked in the top-five nationally. Prior to Ferrum, Lapresi served as the assistant coach for the men’s team at SUNY Cortland from 2021-2022 where he coached four national qualifiers and one All-American. At Cortland, Lapresi was responsible for daily practice and lifting schedules, recruiting, and coordinating travel accommodations for the team. He also taught courses in the College’s physical education department and helped coordinate the hosting the New York State Collegiate Tournament, which annually hosts 12 teams and over 200 wrestlers.

Before Cortland, Lapresi spent time in Boston, MA where he coached with Doughboy Wrestling Club, one of the premier clubs in the New England area, starting in 2018.

“I’m beyond excited to return to New York and be a part of Utica’s inaugural wrestling season,” Lapresi said. “With New York leading the charge in women’s wrestling, it’s truly special to be at the very start of something. It’s my goal to create a program that will facilitate growth and opportunity for young girls across the state similar to how Binghamton, Brockport, Cornell, Ithaca, and countless other programs did for me growing up.”

As a wrestler himself, Lapresi started his collegiate career at Bucknell University before competing at Division I powerhouse Cornell University until he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in 2018.

At the high school level, Lapresi was a two-time All-American and a four-sport star at Lansing High School in Lansing, NY. He was a 2012 New York State champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman at 132 pounds and finished as the state runner-up at 138 in 2013. Lapresi also served as a two-year team captain of both the wrestling and football teams while also competing on the school’s cross country and track & field teams.

Lapresi will be starting at Utica in early February.
