Hiram College names Andy Vogel Director of Wrestling Operations, Head Men’s Wrestling Coach

HIRAM, Ohio – March 23, 2020 – Hiram College Athletic Director Todd W. Hibbs announced on Monday the appointment of Andy Vogel as the Director of Wrestling Operations and head coach for the reinstatement of the Hiram Terriers men’s wrestling program. Vogel joins the Terriers from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa., where he served as the head wrestling coach and assistant director of athletics for the past 13 years.

“We had a strong candidate pool for this position,” Hibbs said. “Still, our search committee was in agreement that his Northeast Ohio ties – combined with his NCAA Division III experience and reputation as a passionate leader in the national wrestling community – made Andy Vogel a clear choice.”

Over 13 years at Gettysburg, Vogel coached three NCAA All-Americans, ten NCAA qualifiers, eight Centennial Conference champions, 44 conference place winners, 18 regional place winners and 19 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans. Vogel also coached the Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year in 2009 and 2012, and the Rookie of the Year in 2016.

Under Vogel’s leadership, the Bullets finished in the NCAA Top 20 in 2013, as well as Top 25 in the NCAA in Team GPA in 2010, 2013 and 2018.

“I am thrilled to begin this journey with Hiram College Athletics,” Vogel said. “I am looking forward to working with Athletic Director Todd Hibbs to restart the men’s wrestling program, and to help launch a women’s program in the next year. Building a men’s team that will compete in the fall of 2020 is an exciting challenge, and I am eager to get started. I am thankful for the opportunity to lead the team and for the alumni, community, and administrative support that has made restarting the team possible.”

Prior to joining the Bullets, Vogel began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant wrestling coach at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

Vogel also served as the program director for Strider Wrestling in Wheaton during his two years with the Thunder, developing and conducting free youth wrestling programs for elementary students.

Outside of his collegiate coaching experience, Vogel is an active member of the wrestling community, and the founder of d3wrestle.com, a website completely devoted to NCAA Division III wrestling. In 2015, d3wrestle.com was named Website of the Year by the National Wrestling Media Association.

A 2003 graduate of Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., Vogel was a three-time All-American at 149 lbs., finishing as the NCAA Division III national runner-up in 2001 and earning seventh-place in 2002 and 2003. Vogel was also a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Champion and graduated with a school-record 157 wins over four years with the Falcons. His senior year, Vogel was named both the school’s Senior Athlete of the Year and the Senior Male Sportsmanship Award recipient.

Additionally, in March 2013, Vogel was named a member of the MAC 100 Century Team, recognizing some of the top student-athletes to compete in the MAC over the last 100 years. And in 2015, he was inducted into Messiah’s Hall of Honor.

Vogel earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Messiah College in May 2003, and his master’s degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. in May 2016.

A native of Northeast Ohio, Vogel was a two-time Ohio High School Athletic Association state finalist and the 1999 state champion at 145 lbs. for Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (CVCA). In 2006, Vogel was inducted to the CVCA Athletic Hall of Fame.

Hiram College Athletics reinstated its men’s wrestling program for the 2020-21 season, while also announcing that women’s wrestling will be added in 2021-22. The Terriers last offered men’s wrestling as a varsity sport during the 1986-87 season.
