Louisville, Kentucky – What started as 95 teams battling for dual meet supremacy ended with six divisional champions at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday.

St. Cloud State, Wartburg, Grand View, Bellarmine, King and Southern Oregon took home top honors in each of the six collegiate divisions that came to a close at the 2023 U.S. Marine Corps NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Meet Championships presented by ARMS Software, Defense Soap, and Capital Construction hosted by NUWAY Combat.

NAIA Men
Grand View ran its National Duals win streak in the NAIA Division to 11 in a row as the Vikings defeated Life University 22-8 for the fourth straight year in the finals. With the win, Grand View extended its NAIA dual meet win streak to 149 in a row. The dual started off with a tightly contested 125-pound scrap between past national champions. Grand View’s Esco Walker, the champ in 2022, took out Brandon Orum, the 2021 champion, 4-2 in sudden victory. It was one of two overtime wins in the dual by the Vikings. At 133-pounds, it was a 1-2 matchup and it was top-ranked Carson Taylor of Grand View topping Jacob Ruiz 6-1.

Grand View continued its run with a sound victory by Shea Ruffridge at 141 pounds before fifth-ranked Blake Gonzalez knocked off Life’s top-ranked Brevin Balmeceda at 149 pounds. A win by top-ranked Giovanni Bonilla gave Grand View a 16-0 lead before Life’s Jack Bass picked off Marty Margolis 6-4 at 165 pounds. Both wrestlers are returning NAIA finalists. Bass at 157 last season, while Margolis is the returning runner-up at the weight.

Grand View would lock up the title with wins by top-ranked Isaiah Luellen at 174 and second-ranked Ben Lee at 184. Life closed with wins at 197 and 285. At 197, returning national champion Zane Lanham beat Grand View’s third-ranked Owen Braungart 9-8.

NCAA Women
King University repeated as NCAA women’s champions with a tight 23-21 victory over second-seeded North Central. The championship was King’s sixth overall and second straight in the NCAA division. Two key wins by King were the difference-makers to give the Tornado the title, but the dual featured eight head-to-head matchups between ranked wrestlers.

King jumped out to a 6-0 lead after wins at 101 and 109 from second-ranked Jessica Corredor and top-ranked Sage Mortimer. Corredor edged sixth-ranked Maddie Avila 6-4. Mortimer jumped out to a 12-4 lead before giving up eight straight and eventually falling behind 14-13 to second-ranked Sydney Petzinger. Mortimer scored the winning takedown with 34 seconds left. North Central went ahead with back-to-back falls from Jaslynn Gallegos at 116 and Amani Jones at 123. Second-ranked Gallegos pinned top-ranked Samara Chavez of King in under a minute, while Jones followed with a fall over fourth-ranked Vayle-Rae Baker late in the first period. After a 4-0 win from Montana Delawder at 130 brought King within 12-9, Viktorya Torres’ come-from-behind fall over Yele Aycock was a huge swing in points. Second-ranked Aycock was up 8-0, two points away from ending the match, when sixth-ranked Torres hip-tossed Aycock for four points and earned the fall confirmation shortly thereafter.

Top-ranked Ana Luciano would follow with a fall at 143 pounds, giving King a 19-12 lead with three bouts remaining. North Central’s fourth-ranked Tiera Jimerson edged fifth-ranked Tiffany Baublitz 3-1. With two-time national champion Yelena Makoyed looming for North Central at 170 pounds, King opted to bump away from Makoyed, giving North Central five points on the forfeit and forced the dual into a 20-20 tie heading into the final bout. King’s move paid off as second-ranked 170-pounder Chey Bowman beat fifth-ranked 191-pounder Treah Haynes 5-1 to give King the championship.

Division II Men
St. Cloud State avenged last year’s loss to Central Oklahoma in the finals and claimed its seventh National Duals championship, topping the Bronchos 19-16 to claim the Division II title. In what’s become a knock-down, drag out dual in the last two meetings, the tone was set early. The first seven bouts featured head-to-head ranked matchups. St. Cloud State’s Paxton Creese scored a fall over Studd Morris in sudden victory to give the Huskies crucial bonus points that ended up being the difference in the dual. Morris was extremely close to scoring the winning points in sudden victory before Creese hit a roll for the winning takedown, then held the position to get the pin.

Central Oklahoma took the next two bouts with second-ranked Dylan Lucas recouping one of the bonus points with a 12-3 major decision over 12th-ranked Caleb Meekins at 133. Ninth-ranked Nate Keim took down eighth-ranked Aleyus Craig 9-4 at 141 before St. Cloud State took two straight of their own with ranked wins at 149 and 157.

At 149, Joey Bianchini scored an escape and a takedown in the third period to edge UCO’s Brik Filippo 9-8. The Huskies’ Nick Novak rallied from a 5-1 deficit to pick up a 6-5 win over second-ranked Gabe Johnson at 157. The two schools would then alternate wins from there on out, with St. Cloud picking up an extra bonus point at 197 when Dominic Murphy scored a 9-0 major decision over returning Division II champion Dalton Abney, who gritted out the match after sustaining an injury.

Division III Men
Augsburg returned to the top of the Division III team podium as the Auggies knocked off fourth-seeded Johnson & Wales 35-8 to win the school’s eighth National Duals championship. The Auggies won eight out of 10 bouts and swept the final five bouts to put the dual out of reach and bring another trophy back to Minneapolis.

Augsburg won three of the first five, but the ranked head-to-heads were 2-1 in favor of Johnson & Wales, highlighted by fifth-ranked Hayden Brown’s 5-4 win over second-ranked Tyler Shilson of Augsburg.

The Auggies big momentum change came at 174 pounds where 15th-ranked Seth Goetzinger rallied from a 4-0 deficit to reverse top-ranked Mike Ross to his back and pick up the fall. The Auggies would close with falls at 197 and 285 from Parker Venz and Tyler Kim.

NAIA Women
Top-seeded Southern Oregon claimed top honors in the NAIA women’s division with a 22-18 win over second-seeded Grand View to give the Raiders its first women’s championship in the event’s history. Scoring points in nine of the 10 bouts was crucial for first-year head coach Gabby Weyhrich’s squad. Southern Oregon opened up winning three of the first four weights, highlighted by Esthela Trevino’s 10-0 technical superiority win over Jalen Bets at 101 pounds. Grand View picked up four points at 116 as Cailin Campbell topped eighth-ranked Glory Konecny.

Campbell was ranked fifth at 123 pounds. The dual’s highlight match came at 143 pounds with top-ranked Alexis Gomez of Grand View picking off second-ranked Emily Se 9-6. Third-ranked Joye Levendusky gave Southern Oregon a shot going into the last weight after her 10-0 170-pound victory over fourth-ranked Abby McIntyre. Southern Oregon’s fifth-ranked Grace Kristoff jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win at 191 pounds over 11th-ranked Olivia Brown and wrap up the dual for the Raiders.

The NAIA women’s championship is the second-ever title won by Southern Oregon at the event. The men won the NAIA men’s division back in 2009.

NCWA Men
Bellarmine, competing with the NCWA during its transitional phase from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I, claimed the NCWA title with a 29-21 victory over Liberty’s club team. Bellarmine, one of three NCAA schools competing during their transitional stage between divisions, went 6-0 on the weekend, including two wins over Queens, which is also in the transition between Division II and Division I. Seven Bellarmine wrestlers – Jack Parker, Michael Schiffhauer, Zac Cowan, Grant O’Dell, Cole Nance, and Devan Herndricks went 6-0 on the weekend.

While the final spread was only an eight-point differential, Bellarmine won seven of the 11 weights and gave up 12 points on two forfeits. The NCWA wrestles an 11th weight class, 235 pounds. The Knights also had the shortest trip to the event, as Bellarmine’s campus is 10 miles from the Kentucky Exposition Center.
