Fresno City Leads After Day 1 of Wrestling State Championships

LEMOORE, Calif. – After day one of the 2022 CCCAA Wrestling State Championships, the Fresno City Rams hold a firm lead over the field with 120.5 points as 11 of their 12 wrestlers advanced to the semi-finals of their respective brackets.

The Rams benefitted from placing two wrestlers in both the 157 pound 174 pound semi-finals. No. 13 seeded Noah Cortez advanced after a fall in his opening bout and a 6-4 win in quarter-finals while No. 3 seeded Jackson Morgan won on falls in both rounds. Jake Prudek was seeded No. 3 in the 157 pound bracket and earned a fall and a 13-3 win on day one. On the other side of the bracket, Reymundo Raiz moved on after defeating two opponents by scores of 7-1 and 3-1.

Trailing the Rams closely is Mt. San Antonio, who placed five wrestlers in the semi-finals and six in the consolation bracket with 96 total points. Top seeded Chris Calderon was dominant in his two bouts as he recorded a fall and a technical fall to earn a spot in the 125 pound semi-finals.

The Mounties are followed by Cerritos with 92.5 points and six in the semi-finals. Cerritos saw two No. 1 seeded wrestlers take care of business on day one with Malachi Lyles cruising in the 197 pound bracket while Mario De La Torre moved on without much resistance in the 141 group.

Sacramento City (58.5 points) and Modesto (52 points) close out the top five leaders after the first day.
