BUFFALO, N.Y. – D’Youville University has announced plans to add women’s wrestling as a varsity sport beginning in the 2023-24 academic year. The addition of this program will bring D’Youville to 17 varsity sports sponsorships.

“This is an exciting day for the university and our athletics department,” said Director of Athletics Ona Halladay. “We are committed to gender equity, Title IX compliance, and creating opportunities for women to compete at the intercollegiate level and beyond. As one of the fastest growing sports in the country, we believe that D’Youville has the infrastructure, resources, and academic profile to become an elite women’s wrestling program.”

In 2004, women’s wrestling was recognized as an Olympic Sports. Since then, 21 NCAA Division II women’s wrestling have been added throughout the United States. The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) has been instrumental in the growth of women’s college wrestling, most notably developing the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA).  The WCWA serves as the governing body for women’s college wrestling and competed under international freestyle rules. The NCAA recognized women’s wrestling as an emerging sport in 2020 for all three divisions.

“This announcement represents the first NCAA Division II affiliated women’s wrestling program in New York State and the 121st intercollegiate program added since 2000,” said Mike Moyer, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Coaches Association. “I know I can speak on behalf of our NWCA Board of Directors when I say that we are forever grateful for the D’Youville administration’s pioneering efforts to add intercollegiate women’s wrestling in a region where scholastic participation is very strong despite the sport being very underserved at the college level.”

A national search will begin immediately for D’Youville’s first women’s wrestling head coach.
