Bluefield, WV – Bluefield State University Athletic Director Derrick Price has announced Brooke Richards as the first ever Women’s Wrestling Coach.

“I am thrilled to have Brooke apart of the Bluefield State family” said Price. “She will bring a ton of experience, knowledge and passion to the sport.  Being able to add another female sport to the athletic department is great. Bluefield State wants to provide our athletes with equal opportunity to showcase their talents.”

A native of Shelby, North Carolina, Richards completed her undergrad at Tiffin University. While there, she was a four-year starter and captain for the wrestling team. She also was a three-time NC USA wrestling national team member and two-time NCWA Scholar All-American.

Richards continued her passion for wrestling by becoming assistant coach at Adrian College and then returning to Tiffin University as a graduate assistant. While coaching, Richards has had one National Champion and three All-Americans. In 2022, she helped guide her team to NCAA national duals fourth place finish and Northeast Regional Champions. She has had ten National Qualifiers, two Regional Champions and ten Scholar All-Americans.

“I am extremely grateful to accept this position and help build something great at a school that is growing as fast as Bluefield State University. Bluefield seems to have great things going on in terms of growth and it is an awesome opportunity to be a part of this growth” said Richards. “I would like to thank the athletic director, Derrick Price, and the head men’s wrestling coach, Blaze Shade, for entrusting me to build this program. I am confident that with their support this could be something great! I also would like to say thank you to everyone who has been a part of my coaching journey so far and for the support and encouragement I have gotten to build a new program. A lot of this would not have been possible without the wrestling community who have put a lot into getting me to where I am today.”
