Alvernia University Tabs Cindy Calixto to Lead Women’s Wrestling Program

Reading, Pa. (June 14, 2022)Alvernia University Director of Athletics Bill Stiles announced on Tuesday the hiring of Cindy Calixto as the Head Women’s Wrestling Coach of the Golden Wolves. 

Calixto joins the Alvernia staff following two years as the graduate assistant coach for Division II East Stroudsburg University.

“Cindy stood out because of her highly successful experiences as a student-athlete, and as an assistant coach,” said Stiles. “She is committed to providing our student-athletes with a positive experience, and will be a wonderful mentor to the young women in our program.”

Calixto competed at Emmanuel College and Springfield Technical Community College. She was a five-time All-American. At Springfield Technical, Calixto was the 2015 NCWA National Runner-Up. At Emmanuel, Calixto was the 2016 WCWA National Fourth-Place finisher. She was also the 2016 U23 fifth place finisher and received Emmanuel’s Female Performer of the Year award. Calixto was the All-American for the Lions.

For the past two years, Calixto has served as the graduate assistant coach at East Stroudsburg University. The Warriors started Womens’ Wrestling during the 2019-20 season, and competed in their first full season following the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2021-22 season. 

During the 2021-22 season, the Warriors went 9-2 in dual competition, including five straight wins to end the season. In tournament competition, the Warriors had two athletes earn All-American honors at the NCWWC National Championship, and the team finished 13th overall. 

“As I begin this new chapter of my life, I would like to thank my previous coaches and mentors that have helped me along the way,” said Calixto. “I am ecstatic to use the knowledge that I’ve learned from being on and off the mat as a former student-athlete and graduate assistant coach.”

“I plan to lead the team through dedication, ambition, and commitment through God’s grace,” added Calixto. “It is an honor to be able to coach the upcoming first year program and be able to lead the pack!”  

Calixto received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Emmanuel College, and her Master’s in Organizational Leadership from East Stroudsburg.

Calixto will begin at Alvernia immediately. Women’s Wrestling will be Alvernia’s 30th NCAA sport. Competition will begin during the 2022-23 academic year.
