BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – On Friday morning, Athletic Director Nate Houser announced that Baker University assistant wrestling coach Adam Venegas has been named the interim head wrestling coach for the Wildcats, effective immediately.

Venegas has spent the last seven years with the Baker wrestling program, serving as both an assistant coach and a graduate assistant for those seven years. Venegas received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 2008 from the University of North Texas, where he also played football and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in 2007.

After beginning his career at Baker as a graduate assistant, Venegas received a Master of Science in Sports Management from Baker University in 2018.

Prior to his time at Baker, Venegas was an assistant coach for both football and wrestling at Blue Valley North. He also spent time at both Rockhurst High School where he was an assistant wrestling coach.

From 2009-2011, Venegas worked at Olathe North High School, serving as the head wrestling coach, assistant track and field coach and an assistant football coach. Along with coaching, Venegas is also a high ranking USA Wrestling official.

Venegas and his wife Kim have been married since 2018 and have a one year old Lola Reed Venegas.

Venegas becomes the interim head coach for a Baker wrestling program that is one of the top programs in the country. The Wildcats have had a total of six National Champions since 2014 and as a team has finished inside the top 20, each of the last five seasons on the men’s side, and has also finished inside the top-20 on the women’s side each of the last two National Invitational tournaments.

Venegas takes over for head coach Cody Garcia who helped grow the Baker wrestling program into what it is today, while coaching five National Champions. Garcia will now become the new head men’s wrestling coach at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

Baker University will be conducting a national search for a new head men’s and women’s coach and this process will commence immediately.

With this search, we are looking to find someone who not only continues to move our wrestling programs forward on and off the mat, but also find the right someone that will continue to set new standards and invest in each and every student-athlete.
