2019 NWCA Convention
Manheim, PA – Fort Lauderdale once again played host to 400-plus wrestling coaches, exhibitors, and wrestlers as they gathered for the NWCA’s 2019 Annual Convention at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center, August 2-4. This year’s title sponsors were Cliff Keen, Defense Soap and Resilite.
In the two days leading up to the convention, 59 men’s and women’s college coaches attended the 11th Annual Collegiate CEO Leadership Academy, which is presented by the US Marine Corps. The participants were led by Dr. Dan Gould of Michigan St. while being paired with longtime successful coaches who served as mentors. Hearing messages of leadership from active duty Marines is always a highlight of this event and this year United State Marines Corps, Col. David Fallon, did not disappoint as he spoke to the similarities between wrestlers and Marines.
For the fourth consecutive year that the convention broke records for the number attendees. “We are so grateful that our member coaches make the commitment to attend this event each and every year,” said Executive Director, Mike Moyer. “We were excited to grow the convention into some new areas as we worked with the NWOA to host an inaugural Officials Summit, gave MYWAY a platform to host their yearly board meeting, as well as host the Division III Hall of Fame Banquet.”
Convention attendees had access to over 20 hours of presentation and technique as well as three engaging Keynote speakers in Aaron Grossman (Kickoff Breakfast), Dave Bunning (Honors Luncheon), and Alan Nero (Awards Luncheon).
Rules and interpretation sessions are always in high demand and this year coaches college coaches were able to hear from such experts as Tim Shiels (NCAA Coordinator of Officials), Chuck Barbee (NCAA Wrestling Secretary-Rules Editor), and Anthony Holman (NCAA Managing Director of Championships and Alliances). Another essential offering for the collegiate members are the Vision Forums for each of the respective divisions. This year saw an overflow crowd of collegiate coaches listen to USAW’s National Teams High-Performance Manager Cody Bickley as he discussed RTCs (Regional Training Centers).
Grand View Head Coach, Nick Mitchell, and Scott Moore, the Head Coach at Lock Haven served as the lead clinicians for the two technique sessions. Shot Sled also hosted short technical demonstration led by Company Co-Founder and former DI wrestler, Joe McMullan.
This year’s Grand Prize winner was Will Gilleland of Bandys High school. Will and a guest will be able to sail on any seven-day cruise with a balcony stateroom on Carnival Cruise Line departing from any port destination in the U.S. Carnival Cruise Line is the most extensive single cruise line in the world with a majority of its ports throughout the U.S. within driving distance.
For the second year in a row, the convention played host to the Scholastic CEO Leadership Academy. The Scholastic version is modeled after the collegiate academies that have been in operation for the past decade. The new middle and high school level academies have taken place across the country in 15 different locations which now includes Fort Lauderdale. Having one in conjunction with the convention allowed coaches the opportunity to engage with other coaches from around the country and not just the state or region. United States Marines Corps Col. David Fallon spoke to the coaches that were in attendance while the academy closed with a panel of legendary high school coaches who shared their coaching journey with those in attendance.
The 2020 NWCA Convention will stay in Fort Lauderdale but will be hosted on the newly remodeled Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Anyone interested in attending should keep an eye on the NWCA Events Page located on their website, content.nwcaonline.com.
